Why We Left Church in College
Gen Y’s and church. It’s all the rage. My mom called the other day and asked if I stopped attending church in college for any length of time and why. I did, as did my brother. (Two preacher’s kid, mind you.) And my husband. And a lot of my friends. But I couldn’t really pinpoint the why. Part of it was because we went to a Christian university that had chapel every single day and Bible classes most days. That’s a lot of textbook Jesus. By the time Sunday rolled around, honestly, we were tired of hearing about it all. It was another lecture in less comfortable seats. But, regardless…
Here’s the thing about church…
I read an article recently about the Top 10 Reasons our Kids Leave Church. As one of those “20-somethings raised in church”, I resonated with almost every word and have been struggling with a lot of these same issues in my own heart. I haven’t left the church like many of my peers, but I’ve had my doubts about it. I had a conversation a while back with a friend of mine (roughly my age) about how little biblical knowledge we have and how ashamed we feel. Not in a legalistic “I must know the Bible from cover to cover to earn God’s grace”, but in a “I can’t answer…
Blessingmas Report, The Christmas Meltdown, & Family Photos
I’ve been putting off an after-holiday blog because there’s too much to recap in an orderly fashion. Let me just start by saying that at our after-church lunch on Sunday, I was waiting outside the one-staller bathroom for my turn when the lady occupying the restroom came out, made eye contact with me, said, “Hold on just a second…”, turned back around, flushed the toilet, and came back out. So that’s how we do, now. We only flush if we make eye contact with the next person in line. Thank you for reading this. Blessingmas Report I’m sure most of you are wondering about Blessingmas 2012. The anticipation of it…
Neighborly Blessingmas Revolution 2012
Gather round the fire, everyone. I’m going to tell you the tale of an underground revolution called Blessingmas 2012. Better yet, I’ll just share the email I sent to a few of my friends: Hey friends. I can still call you that, right? Most of you are probably wondering why you’re still friends with me. I’ll remind you why: my charm is irresistible. Let me give you some background about my cryptic text today. If you’re completely uninterested in that and would rather just know what I’m proposing, skip to the bottom. Last year at this time I decided to make brownies for my neighbors for Christmas. I kind of…
Fall Lineup & Bible Study Woes
Fall Lineup There are some seriously great shows coming on this fall. Did you watch New Girl? Very funny. How about Up All Night? Has potential to be very funny. Parenthood? Best show on television since Friday Night Lights is kaput. Of course there’s the oldies but goodies: House, Modern Family, and Parks and Recreation (does not get near enough publicity). Am I missing any? And don’t say The Office. It is dead to me. Oh, of course. Let’s don’t forget Most Eligible Dallas. Just kidding. It’s more than embarrassing to Dallas/Fort Worth residents. And humans everywhere. Bible Study Woes Last week I decided to get serious about finding things…
Futuristic, Giant Legos, & The Individual Church
Futuristic Age Already?! In case you haven’t read this yet, Google has developed a car that drives itself. They’ve driven it 100,000 miles in California, and it has been in one wreck… when it was rear-ended by a human-driven car. Seriously, we are living in a futuristic age. Remember when you would watch the Jetsons and think, “Flying cars and a robot that makes you bacon – that’d be awesome!” Now that is coming true. TRUE! Maybe not the flying cars yet, but I wouldn’t put it past Google to do that too. They’re taking over the world. Here are some other crazy things that are currently blowing my mind.…
